Trusting Inner Wisdom & Intuition

Have you ever had difficulty making a decision or making a commitment because you lacked confidence in your ability to make the right choice? How often have you experienced an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach that something was amiss? Did you follow your intuition or did you disregard it? We intuitively know what is best for us. Why then do we not trust that?

Some of us were instructed as children not to trust ourselves. Perhaps we were unable to trust our loved ones or they were unable to trust us. Occasionally, life experiences erode our confidence in ourselves. Perhaps you can recall a time when you put your trust in yourself and the result was painful and disastrous. The inability to trust oneself can result from a lack of awareness of one's identity and values. Other times, we know what is best for us, but we do not act accordingly due to fear, external pressure, or the belief that we are unworthy.

We do occasionally make decisions that do not pan out as expected. Sometimes, we ignore the red flags that are present. On occasion, we make the best possible choice. Ask any successful businesswoman about her decision-making process. She will likely tell you she weighed the pros and cons and attempted to foresee any issues. She could have sought the advice of professionals. She ultimately made the most informed choice possible. If you ask her if all of her choices were correct, she will say no. People change as life changes If something does not go as planned, it does not mean that you cannot trust yourself in the future.

Self-love requires a foundation of self-confidence. You know yourself better than anyone else, and no one else will take care of you. If you do not trust yourself, you cannot fully trust anyone else. When you lack confidence in yourself, you will seek advice from others. Your life will be externally focused, and others will make decisions for you.

Make decisions based on what is most important to you and what is most effective. You may solicit the opinions of others if you are willing to prioritize your own emotions. If you are unsure of yourself, take the time to carefully consider your instincts. Spend time in prayer or meditation and request that the truth be revealed to you if you have a relationship with a Higher Power.

During my training for Spiritual Coaching, we were instructed to follow our intuition. Many of us have questioned how we can tell if we are correct. In other words, how can we be certain that we can rely on ourselves? You don't know for sure unless you test it out. As Spiritual Coaches, we were instructed to blurt out what our intuition was telling us and then observe the client's reaction. The more we test our intuition and confirm its accuracy, the more we begin to trust ourselves.

Therefore, experiment. When you next feel uncertain about a decision, pay close attention to your gut reaction. Don't attempt to reason or talk yourself out of your emotions. Try it out and see what happens. You can even make a list of successful instances in which you trusted your intuition. The more you practice self-confidence, the simpler it will become. If you put your trust in yourself and later realize it was a mistake, learn from your error and move on. It's okay to make mistakes. It is preferable to trust oneself and be mistaken than not to trust oneself at all.
