In a birth chart, the Ascendant is known as the rising sign. It represents the beginning of the first house in a chart. In contrast to the standard newspaper horoscope analysis, which bases a person's personality on the Sun Sign (the sign in which the sun resides), astrologers typically project a personality profile based on the characteristics of the first House, or Ascendant.
Midheaven is the point on the birth chart where the sun is located at noon. The sign in which the Midheaven is located not only influences the subject's outward expression in the world, lifestyle, career choice, and attitude, but also events over which the subject has no control. The Midheaven represents the ego, and the characteristics associated with the sign containing the Midheaven are manifested externally.
