Divination (from Latin divinare, "to foresee, foretell, forecast, prophesy") is the attempt to obtain insight into an issue or circumstance via the use of an occult, structured method or ritual.
Throughout history, diviners have obtained their interpretations of how a querent should proceed by interpreting signs, occurrences, or omens, or by contacting a purported supernatural agency.
The Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, England, has a display on divination that includes a variety of objects from various cultures.
Divination can be viewed as a way for organizing seemingly disconnected and random aspects of existence so that they provide insight into an issue at hand. If there is to be a distinction between divination and fortune-telling, divination possesses a more formal or ritualistic element and frequently has a more social character, typically in a religious context, as seen in traditional African medicine. In contrast, fortune-telling is a more common activity for private purposes. Methods of divination differ by culture and religion.
Long has divination been criticized. In the modern period, it has been disregarded as superstition by the scientific community and skeptics; investigations do not support the notion that divination techniques can predict the future more precisely or reliably than they could without it. Philosophers such as the academic skeptic Cicero in De Divinatione and the Pyrrhonist Sextus Empiricus in Against the Astrologers opposed it in antiquity. Lucian, the satirist, devoted a clever essay to the false prophet Alexander.
